UFC fighter rankings: There’s a new top pound-for-pound fighter in the world

Daniel Cormier took quite a step up when he knocked out UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic to become just the second person to hold two UFC titles at the same time. In fact, the UFC rankings panel has decided to bump him into the top spot in the pound-for-pound rankings.

Last weekend’s TUF Finale didn’t change the rankings at all anywhere else really, but UFC 226 sure did. So without further ado, let’s look at all the changes for this week.

P4P - Cormier is your new top guy. That drops Demetrious Johnson to number two. For some reason Max Holloway is up three spots to three, despite not fighting at UFC 226. T.J. Dillashaw is up one to six. Miocic fell a big five spots to seven, and will probably slip further as the weeks go by. The only other change was Robert Whittaker entering the top ten at the expense of Cris Cyborg, who slipped to 11.

Heavyweight - New champ. Miocic down to the top contender spot. Derrick Lewis might have hated his win over Francis Ngannou, but he sure was rewarded for it in the rankings, moving up three spots to number two. Curtis Blaydes falls one to three. Ngannou falls three big spots to four. Alexander Volkov and Alistair Overeem both dropped two spots each to five and six respectively. Everyone from seven to 15 fell one spot due to DC entering the group. That list includes Mark Hunt, Junior dos Santos, Marcin Tybura, Tai Tuivasa, Aleksei Oleinik, Andrei Arlovski, Stefan Struve, Shamil Abdurakhimov, and Justin Willis.

Light Heavyweight - No changes.

Middleweight - Paulo Costa’s big win over Uriah Hall bumped him two spots to eight. Israel Adesanya entered the rankings at nine after his TUF Finale win over Brad Tavares. Tavares is down two to ten. Hall dropped three to 12. Thiago Santos, Elias Theodorou, and Krzysztof Jotko all fell one to 13-15 respectively.

Welterweight - No changes.

Lightweight - Tony Ferguson is the new number one contender at 155, with rankers finally seeing fit to drop Conor McGregor a bit. He fell to two. Anthony Pettis is up four spots to eight with his win over Michael Chiesa. Chiesa fell three to 12.

Featherweight - Yair Rodriguez quietly re-entered the rankings at 15 after his return to the UFC (though he hasn’t fought yet).

Bantamweight - No changes.

Flyweight - No changes.

Women’s Bantamweight - No changes.

Women’s Flyweight - Roxanne Modafferi is up four spots to four after a TUF Finale win over Barb Honchak. Lauren Murphy, Katlyn Chookagian, and Liz Carmouche all fell one spot each to 5-7 respectively. Jessica Eye is up one two eight. Honchak is down two to nine. Montana De La Rosa re-enters the rankings at 15.

Youth is the name of the game for the Fight Pass portion of UFC 227. Marlon Vera is the most experienced member – in terms of fights in the UFC with 8 – and he’s just 25. In terms of age, Kyung Ho Kang is the oldest member on this portion of the card at 30. That isn’t exactly young, but he hasn’t seen his best days yet. Bethe Correia pulled from UFC 227, Irene Aldana won’t get replacement

The first issues have struck UFC 227 . Just a few days before the card, it appears that the California State Athletic Commission has decided to pull women’s bantamweight fighter Bethe Correia from her fight with Irene Aldana . The reason? Something to do with her eye. MMA Brasil’s Matheus Costa on Twitter posted the news, with original credit to AG Fight: Bethe Correia is out of UFC 227. The CSAC has detected a problem in her left eye and made she pull out of the card. Aldana will be also removed from the card.
